A traditional heavy-duty diesel viscosity

15W-40 has long been common in diesel pickups, heavy-duty trucks and equipment. AMSOIL offers synthetic 15W-40 options designed for demanding diesel service, but viscosity alone does not determine compatibility.

Check specification and climate

Compared with 5W-40, 15W-40 is thicker during cold startup. For warmer climates or engines that specifically call for 15W-40, it remains an important option. Follow the engine manufacturer’s viscosity chart and required oil specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is AMSOIL 15W-40 used for?

15W-40 is a common heavy-duty diesel viscosity. It may be appropriate for many pickups, commercial trucks and equipment when the required specification allows it.

Is AMSOIL 15W-40 fully synthetic?

AMSOIL offers Signature Series 15W-40 100% Synthetic Max-Duty Diesel Oil. Review the current product details and application requirements before purchase.

15W-40 Diesel Guide

Where 15W-40 fits in diesel maintenance

15W-40 is a common heavy-duty diesel viscosity, but the correct choice still depends on the engine manufacturer, model year, climate and required performance specification. It is often considered by owners of diesel pickups, commercial trucks, agricultural equipment and other heavy-duty applications when the manufacturer allows this grade.

Warm-weather operation

The 15W winter rating makes this grade more common in moderate and warm climates than in extreme cold. Always check the temperature range allowed for your engine.

Towing & heavy load

Heavy towing raises engine load and temperature. Correct oil level, cooling-system condition and a quality filter are just as important as viscosity.

Older & newer diesels

Do not assume every diesel can use the same 15W-40. Emissions systems and manufacturer approvals can change the required oil specification by model year.

15W-40 or 5W-40?

Both may be approved in some diesel applications, but they are not automatically interchangeable. A 5W-40 generally offers better low-temperature flow while maintaining the same SAE 40 operating-temperature grade. See our 5W-40 vs. 15W-40 comparison for a broader explanation.
